The Particle Garden 2009 ~ The Art and Science of Second Life Particles

October sees both my third rez day and the second anniversary of my first public exhibit in SL: 'The Particle Garden'.

'The Particle Garden 2007' holds a special fondness for me because it was on seeing this exhibition that Vela and Josina invited me to join CARP.

'The Particle Garden 2009', short preview video below, is my contribution to celebrate two incredible years of CARP projects. As a team we have achieved so much; as individual artists none of us have been left unchanged.

This has been in large part due to Vela's vision and technical abilities, Josina's diplomacy and kindness and their shared generousity of spirit.

'The Particle Garden 2007' has been on exhibit constantly for the last two years and still attracts healthy traffic.

'The Particle Garden 2009' re-visits and upgrades all of the 2007 particle sculptures. Each has been totally re-scripted but with two years of additional scripting experience to call upon. Without doubt, the 2009 exhibition is more sim-friendly and uses less resources. Additionally, the scripts are now complied in MONO and I have especially focused on employing MONO's 'bytecode sharing' capabilities. In the grand scheme of things I am not sure how much additional benefit bytecode sharing will bring, almost certainly not as much as the other scripting efficiencies that the 2009 version brings, but, in a world where we constantly grapple with lag, every efficiecy helps regardless of seemingly how small.

'The Particle Garden 2009' will also feature new applications of some of the particles effects that were used in 'The Wall', 'The Rings' and 'Metropolis', as well as other effects I have written as private commissions and some entirely new 'ground-up' effects.

2009 will also be more interactive than the 2007 version. It will be necessary to walk around and walk right up to the sculptures in order to activate some of them.

The 2009 venue is significantly bigger than the 2007 venue.

I am hopeful that a number of CARP musicians will agree to play a gig at the venue.

'The Particle Garden 2009 ~ The Art and Science of SL Particles' opens on 'Benvolio' region in October 2009.
