There has been talk of 3D meshes in SL for a while now.
Interestingly, when I originally brought my regions on OLG (Oct 2008) it was because this grid was heavily promoting that it would be soon™ be integrating realXtend open source meshes. This was the single most important technical reason I purchased regions there. It looks as if this has now fallen thro', and 10 to 11 months on it is not any closer nor expected in the foreseeable future....so I have decisions to make in this regards. But I digress...
LLab are progressing their 3D mesh technologies and recently a video was released demo'ing it. What is of special interest to me is how it is responding to dynamic lighting. Further, it seems that the 6-light OpenGL restriction can be worked around and it will be possible to render hundreds of lights with little performance hit. Elfod mentioned something like this to me recently and maybe he has done some tests and can let us know more info.
Duggy Bing, of SL 'Cartoonimals' fame and who also made the giant animated puppets for 'The Wall V-2' is doing some wonderful things with sculpties and 3D meshes. Look forward to when he can upload the 3D mesh into SL. I have seen a few pictures of some of the 3D things he is creating, and, as you would expect from Duggy, they are simply fabulous.
