Virtual Cinetic & Cybernetic Art in the Second Life Metaverse Infrastructure

As some of you may already know, CARP are intending to do a new version of 'The Wall', which, imaginatively, we are calling "V-3".

During Xmas/New Year, the plan is to perform a mega-show of 'The Wall V-3', 'The Rings' and 'Metropolis' back-to-back.

'V-1' was performed at Benvolio and the 4-sim venue at Havens Paradise.
The first 'V-2' was performed as the last gig at Havens then continued at New Media Consortuim (NMC).
For 'V-3', we return home to Benvolio.

In this blog, I will only address matters concerning 'The Wall V-3'

The primary purpose of 'V-3' is to produce a high-quality machinima but we will also be performing the show on a limited number of occasions in front of a live audience as part of CARP's Xmas/New Year extravaganza

We expect that the same crew who performed in 'V-2' will also perform in 'V-3' but, should anyone drop out, we'll place an ad in 'Situations Vacant'.

Our goal is to make this the best 'The Wall' so far.

From an audience perspective, there is only one significant change in 'V-3': the show will now be camera-controlled in a similar way that 'Metropolis' is. The resulting footage will form the baseline for the machinima.

From a technical perspective, there are a number of significant changes including using eight individual MP3's (as opposed to a single 45min MP3), a re-write of the Controller system and attendant sub-systems, re-organising the wall controller and timings, the introduction of the camera system and faux-rez type "venue re-build" system. Altho' these things are time consuming and hard work, we hope that they will contribute to making the machinima somewhat easier, making the show easier to control (we will be able to play individual songs rather than be forced to start the soundtrack from the beginning each time) and help with the synch'ing of soundtrack and object control. Additionally, these changes will also make it easy to re-build the venue at any time in the future. For the most part, the technical changes will be carried out by Elfod, Vela and I.

From a performers' perspective, there will be very little change from 'V-2' to 'V-3' but, nevertheless, rehearsals will still be necessary.

On Sunday I worked on splitting the original CARP re-mixed 45min soundtrack into eight bite-sized MP3's. I also finished the first draft of the revised timelines so that Vela can start work on the controllers. Likely the timelines will change numerous times before rehearsals start. However, I am (somewhat) hopeful that the new MP3s will not change. As such, if you wish to have a copy of the eight new 'The Wall V-3' MP3s then you can download a zipped file of them all from this link:

The link is valid for another 5 days.

The next steps...Vela has already built the venue and started work on the new controllers; Elfod to install the wall; me to start installing objects including determining the changed region vectors that need to be entered into scripts; Elfod & I work on determining the new wall timings.

Because of work commitments, we aim to start rehearsals sometime in November. Until Burning Life is finished, I am personally already up to my limit with work, including sorting out the move back to SL from OLG (new SL sim delivered an hour ago!)

November may seem far away, but it will come around soon enough.

As I was working on the soundtrack last weekend, listening and remembering the original 'The Wall' and 'V-2', I became excited for the prospect of 'V-3'. I very much look forward to working again on 'V-3' and performing with the crew during Xmas/New Year
